Responsible gambling: tools and helplines across Canada

Low minimum deposits make online casinos feel harmless. Ten dollars is the price of lunch, and losing it rarely hurts. The risk is repetition: a cashier that accepts C$10 will accept it again five minutes later, and again after that. This page covers the tools that stop that from happening, the signs that gambling has stopped being fun, and where to call for help in each province and territory.

Tools inside your casino account

Every casino we list has a responsible gambling section in the account menu, sometimes labelled "Safer play" or "Player protection". These are the settings to look for.

Deposit limits

Choose a ceiling per day, week or month. A lower limit applies at once; a higher one normally waits at least 24 hours, sometimes a week, so a bad evening can't undo a decision made with a clear head. If you plan to deposit C$10 a week, set the weekly limit to C$10 and leave it there.

Loss, wager and session limits

Loss limits cap how much you can lose over a period, whatever you deposit. Wager limits cap the total amount bet. Session reminders interrupt play after a set time and show how long you have been logged in and what you have won or lost.

Time-outs

A time-out, sometimes called a cool-off, locks the account for a short period you pick, typically from 24 hours to six weeks. You can't log in or deposit until it ends, and it can't be cancelled early.

Self-exclusion

Self-exclusion closes the account for six months, a year, five years or permanently. The casino should also stop all marketing to you. Exclusion at one brand doesn't cover its sister sites unless the operator says so, so if you are excluding from Jackpot City, for example, ask whether Spin Casino, Royal Vegas and Ruby Fortune are included.

Provincial schemes go further. Licensed operators in Ontario and Alberta must offer self-exclusion under their provincial standards, and the Crown lottery sites (OLG, PlayAlberta, Loto-Québec, PlayNow and ALC) each run their own exclusion programme.

Tools outside the casino

Several Canadian banks can block gambling transactions on debit and credit cards on request, and some offer it as a switch in the banking app. Blocking software such as Gamban or BetBlocker stops gambling sites from loading on your phone and computer. Both are useful because they work even when you are tempted to undo a casino setting.

Warning signs

Gambling problems rarely start with large sums. Look out for:

  • depositing again soon after losing, to "win it back";
  • raising bets because small stakes feel pointless;
  • using money meant for rent, bills or groceries;
  • hiding play or losses from people close to you;
  • feeling restless or irritable when you try to stop;
  • borrowing, or moving savings, to keep playing;
  • gambling to escape stress or low mood.

One or two of these from time to time is a cue to set limits. Several at once, or any that keep coming back, is a reason to talk to someone.

For people playing with C$10

Treat the deposit as the cost of the evening, not an investment. Decide before you log in whether you will deposit once or not at all if it goes badly, and set that as your limit. Keep bets small enough to make the balance last: 10 or 20 cents a spin on C$10. Skip bonuses whose wagering keeps you playing longer than you intended. And if you win, withdraw it; a balance left in the account tends to get played.

If you are under 19, or under 18 in Quebec, Alberta and Manitoba, online casinos are not for you, and no legitimate site will pay out to a minor.
